For those who would really like to quit smoking the thought of fighting the consequences of not having a smoke is generally pretty scary. Once one starts to smoke, nicotine, the addictive substance in tobacco, quickly takes hold of a persons mental and physical being and it is almost impossible to ignore the urge to light up a cigarette. Breaking the habit of smoking is quite challenging, because the smoker not only has his body crying out for a cigarette, he also has his subconscious constantly nagging him to light up.

Actually the mental pressure brought to bear by your subconscious is the most difficult thing to ignore during the initial stages of quitting the habit, as a smoker is inclined to light up a cigarette without even realizing what he is doing. The best way to start overcoming this auto response is to keep tobacco well out of reach and to keep your mind busy at all times.

It is essential to keep your hands busy when you are trying to give up the habit of smoking cigarettes, and it is important to think about what you are doing at all times. Try and not get into any stressful situations, particularly when you are at work, and when your at home you can busy yourself with housework, doing exercise routines, playing a musical instrument or simply by doing some writing or typing.

You will need to get some low calorie lollies or gum to counter the instinct of putting a cigarette in your mouth. You can pick up some flavored lozenges from the drug store that are designed for ex smokers to replace the flavor of cigarettes. These of course, are not addictive and don’t replace nicotine, but they do give your mouth something to suck on and help you to keep your mind off the urge to smoke.

During your quiet times it is good for you to meditate by concentrating on the evils of smoking and the damage that it can do to your body. Try and train your mind to conjure up one of these notions instead of sending you a signal to light up a smoke. Also make a mental note of the number of days since you have had a smoke, as this will help you to mentally confirm the fact that you are about to be smoke free within the next week or two.

Being able to control the subconscious urge to smoke will put you well on the way to quitting smoking forever. Of course, your body will be craving for it’s regular supply of nicotine, however this can be overcome by applying substitutes, such as nicotine patches, which are available over the counter at drug sores and supermarkets.

If you find that you are unable to cope with the physical withdrawal symptoms, then you should consult a doctor and ask him to recommend some medication to help you though the remainder of your nicotine detox program. Do whatever you can at this stage to conquer your addiction, but do not take a cigarette as it will only take two weeks to quit smoking, so count down the days and look forward to the day that the urge to smoke is no longer there.

    I saw this video 4 weeks ago and stopped smoking. I had smoked for 35 years. The logic is impeccable; when I think I want one I question myself why: do I want concentration/relaxation/stress relief/boredom relief? Then think how a smoke will solve that. And of course it doesn’t so the craving just isn’t there. And the craving/withdrawal really is a myth. It doesn’t happen. If you think you’re having any “withdrawal” compare that pain to any other pain.

    This is the dumbest thing you can do! In the end it’s ONLY another nicotine delivery device. I also needed 3 tries to get away from and somehow I don’t understand whythe nicotine mafia is legal and other things are forbidden….nicotine is really harmful…
